Tark

Privacy

Every site Tark talks to on its own, and why. That's the whole list.

Tark has no account, no sync, no usage reports and no crash reports. Your history, bookmarks, passwords and passkeys stay on your Mac. Typing in your language and the @ sources are worked out on your Mac too.

Apart from the sites you visit, Tark only contacts the hosts below. If a new feature ever needs another, it's added here first.

Search

shodhya.com, api.shodhya.com

Your searches, the suggestions while you type, and the new tab page. Only while Shodhya is your search engine; you can pick another in Settings → Search.

When you search

Ad blocking

uBlock Origin's filter lists

ublockorigin.github.io, ublockorigin.pages.dev, cdn.jsdelivr.net, raw.githubusercontent.com, malware-filter.gitlab.io, malware-filter.pages.dev, curbengh.github.io, publicsuffix.org, pgl.yoyo.org. The lists of ads, trackers and malware sites to block; nothing about you is sent. Switching uBlock Origin off stops them.

uBlock Origin updates its lists

Only when you ask

chromewebstore.google.com, clients2.google.com, clients2.googleusercontent.com

Installing an extension from the Chrome Web Store, and update checks for the extensions you installed from it.

When you install an extension
update.googleapis.com, edgedl.me.gvt1.com

The Widevine module some streaming sites need. Only after you turn on protected content in Settings → Privacy; turning it off deletes it.

When you turn it on
gettarka.com/models/

The live caption and translation models, downloaded once, after Tark tells you the size, the first time you turn on captions or Translate (or from Settings → Live captions), without cookies. Captions and translations are made on your Mac: no audio or text is sent anywhere. The captions history (☰ Earlier) is kept in memory only, never on disk, and goes when you turn captions off, leave the site or close the tab.

When you turn captions on
Apple

On macOS 26, captioning English, Spanish and the other languages macOS handles uses the Mac's own speech recognition and Translation; the first time, macOS downloads that language from Apple. Tark sends Apple nothing.

When you caption one of them

Tark itself

gettarka.com

This site. Tark asks for gettarka.com/appcast.xml once a day to see whether there is a new version, and downloads it from here. The request carries only Tark's version, like any download; no system profile, nothing else about you.

Once a day

Tark for Android

The same promise on your phone: no account, no sync, no usage or crash reports. Search goes to Shodhya, as above. Instead of uBlock Origin's lists and the Mac's update check, Tark for Android contacts only these, all on this site and without cookies. Settings → Privacy and security → What Tark connects to shows the same list.

gettarka.com/lists/android/

The ad and tracker lists, signed, which Tark checks before using them. Once a day on Wi-Fi, every three days on mobile data.

Once a day
gettarka.com/xlit/android/

The Indian-language suggestions' model and word lists, downloaded once after you say yes (on Wi-Fi unless you choose "Download now"). The suggestions are worked out on your phone; what you type is never sent for them.

When you ask
gettarka.com/android/

For the APK from this site only: once a day Tark reads the small index of the newest version, with nothing about you or your phone. Installed from Google Play, Tark never checks: Play updates it.
